How does language work?

Much of modern thought focuses on the meaning of words (c.f. Dictionaries, axiomatic mathematics).

Language communicates by virtue of the relationships between words. The pattern of words in a sentence is what communicates information.

Individual words are placeholders for other patterns. As we build up sentence upon sentence we are creating ever larger and more complex patterns of relationships (between other relationships). It is this pattern of relationships that holds and conveys meaning.
